Peyton DeVaughn-1850 VA Census
Posted by: Donna Gardiner Date: March 10, 2002 at 07:49:17

Could anyone solve this mystery I found in the 1850 VA Census. The ancestor whose ancestry I am searching is Horace DeVaughn who married Elizabeth Gardiner. He was born in Va in 1846. Checking the 1850 census I find the following: Peyton DeVaughn, 37, laboror, b. VA with Mary A. DeVaughn, 36, wife, then the mystery comes up. With them is Margarite Taylor 37, Landiana (couldn't read name) Taylor 13, Elizabeth Taylor 10, Mary A. Taylor 6, Horace Taylor 4, David Taylor 1, Nicko (another name I couldn't read 9/12), and two laborors George and John Berry. Horace Taylor is 4 which agrees with his age in 1880 DC Census as 34, and in 1880 Peyton DeVaughn is listed as father lives with him and his family and he is 69 b. VA. DC 1880 shows the following: Horace DeVaughn 34, b. VA, Elizabeth 31, wife, b. MD, Ann J, 7, b. DC, Henry 2, b. DC, Infant 1/12 b. DC and Peyton, 69, father, b. VA. Another coincidence is that in the same area of DC there was a David DeVaughn.

Any help will be appreciated.
