There is an older thread running from 1998 re this farmer who got caught up in an altercation with a relative of mine, Tobias Martin a year before, shot him and was hung for it.
There is now an excellent site put up the Congressional Cemetery where Tobias Martin is buried which quotes at length under his entry from the National Intelligencer and the trial and gives some family details. http://www.congressionalcemetery.org// and look under Obits then Martin.
Devaughan lived with wife and little daughter "more than a mile north of the General Post Office Building, and without the bounds of the city" /He/ "cultivated a field or two there".
When he was being sought he was described as "a man advanced in years, perhaps sixty, of a stout rough frame, 5 feet 8 or 10 inches high, his hair and whiskers gray, and his face remarkable for the uncommon projection of his under lip. It is hoped that this description will be sufficient to lead to his apprehension"
I hope this description helps someone in their Devaughan research. He sounds aggressive in the flowery language of the time but after all children had been trespassing after berries. But he must have had a wit because I have a story not yet sourced that he said later something like - I have shot many a bird but now I'm to be hung for shooting a marten.
