The 1880 census shows a Daniel H. Devanney living on 6th Street in St. Louis. He was a gas fitter, aged 27. Born in Ohio of Irish parents. He had a one-year-old daughter, Mary Ellen, who was born in Kentucky. And a "sister" named Mary Kane—she must have been a half-sister. Next door was a druggist named Michael Devany, also born in Ohio.
