My wife's maiden name is DeVaney. Apparently her line of the family makes a point to make the V capitalized, as that is its original spellin (so I'm told). I did a bit of internet research and found a web site that said DeVaney was Spanish in origin. A Spanish sailor by the name of DeVanez was shipwrecked from the Spanish Armada that was destroyed in a storm while enroute to England. The same site also mentioned the term "Black Irish" for the descendants of DeVanez because they had more of an olive complexion than the typical Irishman. But from the reading, a Norman origin sounds more likely.
