Devaney/Native American Connection

Recently, I heard a family story that has been passed down from several generations. I have no written documentation, just verbal accounts. This is the story:

My gg-grandmother was Nancy Elizabeth McKnight (1854-1946). She married James Thorton Seal (1845-1924) of Franklin County, Alabama and both are buried together in Robinson Cemetery of that county.

Nancy's parentage has always been a mystery to me. We know she had American Indian Ancestory and I guess we've assumed over the years she was at least part Cherokee Indian.

The other day, my grandmother's oldest sister (who is 92) told me a story about Nancy that was passed down to her from her father (Daniel Webster Seal 1885-1979).

Nancy's mother was a DeVaney from Russellville, Alabama. She married ? McKnight (1/2 American Indian) and moved to Mississippi. While in Mississippi, they had one daughter (Nancy Elizabeth) and a few years afterwards the Civil War broke out. It is believed that Nancy had no brothers or sisters. When the Union Armies came through thier part of Mississippi the family buried their food and belongings to protect it from looting. However, Nancy's father was hung by the Union Troops.

After the news made it back to Russellville, one of Nancey's Devaney uncles came to carry them back to Russellville. Nancy grew up with her mother in her uncle's home in Franklin County. It is believed that this uncle was called Tob or Todd Devaney.

Some assumptions I'm making at this point is that Nancey's father was probably Chickasaw instead of Cherokee. Nancey's mother's father is probably Charles Devaney of Russellville, Alabama.

I have a small publication that is called "Forefathers of Franklin County" by Richie Hester. In it he has a brief narration about the Devaney family. He notes that one of Charles' sons (John), married an "Indian Girl". This atleast helps support the story that maybe one of Charles' daughters marred a Native American as well.

If this story sounds familiar to anyone, and if anyone can help me fill in the holes, I sure would appreciate your coorespondence.

Thanks in advance,
C. Smith
