I am a Rhode Island Devaney living in Hawaii. I was told most of the Devaney name comes from a small village in Ireland named Glencar in County Leitrim. The name is prounouced Devaney like uncanny, but in my generation the others changed it to Devaney rhyming with rainy. I figured it is because I was frequently called Delaney and to this day many will remember me as Delaney.

A few weeks ago I was at a function at the Hospital where I work and the Chief of Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Phil Lewis introduced me to his wife whom he married in Argentina. Her maiden name was DeVanney and she came from Southern France. She told me the entire village had that name and maybe even the town. I will ask Phil tomorrow the exact spelling of the name and some more information and will pass it on to you.

I was also told that Devaney is a "Norman" name thus it has French roots.

My grandmother was named Giroux so there is no doubt that I have at least 25% French blood and probably even more, but I usually only own up to my "Irish" roots.

Sincerely,

Don Devaney
