Thomas DEVANEY sailed from Sligo, Ireland on the last day of February, 1847 on the "Demerest" which ran afoul in a hurricane on March 21st; crew and passengers were rescued and delivered to St. John, NB on April 13, 1847. Thomas, a cabinetmaker, settled in Port Hope, ON, was married by 1853. His brother Patrick, a cooper, who may have emigrated at a later date, also settled there and married Maria Deary. Both brothers had children and both appear in the Canada directory of 1857/58 in Port Hope. Marriage records seem to have been lost and Ontario did not maintain BMD registrations prior to 1868. Did these brothers come from Rosses Point? Were they brothers of Martin Devaney born in 1820? Would anyone know about this family? I need to put a dent in this steel wall. Can anyone help? Thanks D.
