I find this very interesting! My grandmother, Pearl Wright DeVaney always insisted that the family was French. My uncle even bears the middle name of DeVaney (note the capital 'V'). Pearl married my grandfather, Edward Bork, who was 1/2 German and 1/2 French. I always assumed that Pearl claimed to be French to impress her French mother-in-law. (I've been told that her mother-in-law, my great grandmother, wasn't very fond of the Irish!)

Pearl descended from William Deveny of Dungammon, Tyrone, Ireland (who was supposedly the son of a Jenkins Deveny.)

I would love to find evidence of this French connection. It is interesting that it has been passed down in several different lines of Devaneys!

Keep me in mind if you find more on this.
