My G-Grandmother Devinny told me the same thing. We were told that the name was (sp) Devaunex, and they originated in France, but left there during the French Huganots revolt. I havnt found out what that exactly ment, but I know our line ended up in Dungannon,Tyrone Co., Ireland where they staye for awhile, untill a son William Deveny came to the US. He spent the rest of his days in Monmouth Co., New Jersey. Most of his children immigrated to (various places) in PA, and some to Rutherford Co., North Carolina.
If this is any help, please contact me.
