DeVaney - French/Irish Connection?

My DeVaney (note spelling) ancestors are from County Mayo, but have always claimed that they were originally French, hence the odd spelling. My grandmother told me that a DeVaney piloted a boat from France to Ireland following the Fr. Revolution. Anyone heard a similar story?
