Thomas Devaney sailed from Sligo, on the last day of Feb 1847 on the ship "The Demarest". On March 19 it foundered in the North Atlantic; the survivors were picked up by the bark "The Folcan" on March 21 which then arrived in St. John NB on April 13, 1847. He made his way to Port Hope, ON where he earned his living as a cabinetmaker. He met Caroline Franklin and married on Aug 26, 1859. The had 4 children:

John Albert Devaney died in 1906, Toronto
Thomas Burke Devaney
Joseph H. Devaney
Cecilia who married a Mr. Ray

These 4 children produced 21 grandchildren.

Thomas died in 1862 in Port Hope, ON of TB. His wife supported her children by operating a boarding house in Gananoque, ON and eventually in Toronto. Boarding houses were popular homes for those building railroads and canals in those early days.

I am a great granddaughter of Thomas and Caroline through John Albert. Thomas Burke children were Lyndon, Bud and Dorothy; never known those of Celia's, and only know that Joseph H. married a girl from Buffalo, NY, had 2 daughters; marriage didn't work well, she returned to Buffalo with daughters and he lived with his mother.

Can anyone fill in the blanks?
