The DAR has a copy of the original article in their membership applications database - I believe my great great aunt used it as a "proof" in her application in the 1960's sometime.I can probably get one of DAR registrar friends to pull it out and send it to me.The scan is pretty poor though and not very legible.I doubt that it references where the portrait was from.
I've done a bit of reading about the social culture of nobility in the late 17th century. What I gather is that even if Margaret was the illegitimate child of Francois Louis Bourbon DeConti (there is actually a legit difference between DeConti and DeConde and if her father was a DeConti then she would not have been a DeConde - they are from the same lineage but the names split to refer to two different lines of the same family with different titles) then there would probably still be some record of her in a history.Illegitimate children were pretty common in the nobility and because the idea that someone's place in society was determined by their bloodlines, even an illegitimate child would have probably been a person of note.
I'll try to get a hold of the article from the Tampa Tribune, but I don't really think it's going to give us any more information. There may be no way of knowing, even if we have the original painting, that it was of Margaret DeConde and that she is the same Margaret that married Thomas DeVane.Honestly, I really think that most of the story we've all heard for years is simply a legend.Currently I am working on alternative theories and will keep them posted on the message boards.Since the first record that we know of Thomas and Margaret Devane is from about 1723 in Bath Co, NC I am starting there.
Would you mind replying with the stats/info for Mary Margaret DeVane?DOB, DODeath, Place of birth and death, husband and children, etc?I don't have any solid info for her even though I know she existed.I have three different possible birth dates and I'm curious to know if you have more concrete information.
