I've run into a similar problem. Pursued a few theories, but nothing has panned out. I now thinks that neither Thomas or his wife Margaret came from France. See my most of Feb 2011 for the argument (Origins of DeVanes in America). I think the correct birthdate is 1700 or thereabouts considering the age of his wife and when they had their children (though that's not necessarily proof because men often married women that were much younger). I think it's entirely possible that Margarest father was Darby Sullivan(t) and that he was born in Barbados, then an English colony. Might stand to reason that Thomas' family came through there as well, but none of the baptismal records I've gone through from the churches in Barbados list a DeVane or DeVaughn (as it's spelled on a deed from Bath Co, NC).
