Hello Gene - I don't know if you're checking this or will even get the message, but I am trying to follow the trail of Margaret DeConde/Sullivan(t) as well. From the research I have done, it seems unlikely that Margaret was the daughter of Francois Louis DeBourbon DeConde and Marie Therese DeBourbon - any list of their issue that I have found online does not list a daughter named Margaret, let alone one that was born in 1703.In fact, of the seven children they had, only 3 survived infancy. So, that lead me to start trying to chase down some of the facts you had in your previous post about Margaret possibly being the sister of Mary Sullivant Lee and the daughter of Darby Sullivant.Through some twisted searching online, I found a Darby Sullivant (baptised 18 October 1668) who was the son of Humphrey and Alice Sullivant and a Derby Sullivant (baptised 11 April 1669) who was th son of Owen and Catharine Sullivant - both were born in Barbados. This struck me as interesting since the tale about Margaret and Thomas Devane said that they had come to NC by way of Barbados - perhaps Margaret's real family had actually been settlers of Barbados, which fed the legend. There are quite a few settlers listed in Christ Church Parish in Barbados in the late 1600s.Additionally, histories of the English settlers in Barbados will show that many left for North America (specifically the Carolinas and Virginia) after the sugar cane trade caused wealthy planters to push our the poorer ones. The timeline just seems to fit.
On a different note, a history I found about Thomas Devane that says that he probably came to America around 1721 and New Hanover Co (after it was formed) in 1727-1729.In your previous post you noted that Thomas Devaughn sold all his lands in Bath Co in 1727, which would coincide with the move from elsewhere in to New Hanover in 1727-1729.In 1735 Thomas Devane (note the spelling change) was granted land from the king in New Hanover Co - thus beginning the line of Devanes in that area.
Can I ask where you found the deed in Bath Co where David Lee gave land to his brother in law, Thomas Devaughn? And also the record that Thomas Devaughn sold all his lands in Bath Co in 1727?I would very much like to put these pieces together and see what I can find. It's entirely possible that both Thomas and Margaret's families were previously from the Barbados colony...
If you happen to see this, I would really appreciate a reply. Perhaps you have a detail or two that might help!
