Hello everyone,
My brother-in-law is descended from Stephen DeVane. I have only researched this family for one day. I have in mind to give him a Xmas gift of information about his family. I already have a question. John DeVane, born about 1812, North Carolina is enumerated in the 1840 census in Marion County, Georgia; his wife is age 20 to 30. There are no children. By 1850 he is enumerated in the 1850 census in Marion County and Eliza, assumed wife, age 25. Stephen is age 3. It is my undertanding that there are no records for Marion County prior to 1846 because of a courthouse fire. It seems possible that John DeVane had 2 wives; first unknown and second Eliza; because of the age of the wife in the 1840 census and the difference in the ages of Thomas and Eliza. I have the 1860 census data in Schley County, Georgia; and I downloaded a Rev. pension file to sister's computer for a DeVane but he only had 2 daughters and one married a Hollaway and the other a DeVane, but I am sure that there is a connection and I will figure that out later. This pension file is over 60 pages and too large to transfer via email. The pension files are on Footnote and you can probably get a free trial to download those of interest.
Does anyone have any additional information that they are willing to share about John and Eliza and Stephen?
