I am seeking information regarding Sarah Amanda Wise, wife of Thomas DeVane of Barbour County, AL in 1874, as indicated by the following Barbour County, AL probate record: The State of Alabama Barbour County Probate Court In the matter of the estate of Ezekiel Wise, deceased To Hon. H. C. Russell, Judge of Probate of Barbour county. The petition of Lemuel L. Wise respectfully represents that Eziekiel Wise departed this life in Barbour county on or about the 30th day of October 1874 leaving no last will or testament, so far as petitioner knows or believes, and that his death was known more than 10 days before this day, and this petitioner further shows that the said Ezekiel Wise was at the time of his death an inhabitant of this county and died seized and possessed of real and personal property in this state consisting of lands, cotton, corn, provisions, cattle, hogs, farming implements, horse, house and kitchen furniture & other personal property all of said real & personal estate to be worth about $1500.00 and probably not more, that the names, residences, & ages & conditions of the heirs & distributes of the estate of said decedent so far as your petitioner knows or believes are as follows - to wit- 1. Winniford Wise - widow. Barbour County Ala. 2. Lovy A. Stewart, wife of James L. Stewart residence of Bienville Parish Louisiana 3. Lemuel L. Wise - Barbour County Ala. 4. Mary Jane Howell, wife of Turner Howell, Barbour County. Ala. 5. John E. wise - Barbour Co. Ala 6. Sarah Amanda Devane, wife of Thos Devane of Barbour County Alabama 7. Narcissa E. Williamson, daughter of Elizabeth Williamson, decd, who was a daughter of said Ezekiel Wise, decd, & who resides in Barbour County, Alabama & all over the age of 21 years. And petitioner further states that said Winniford Wise is blind & old and helpless, and is unable & declines to act as Admin of said estate that your petitioner being one of the sons of said deceased, an inhabitant of said state above the age of 21 years, and in no respect disqualified under the law from serving as admr believing that the said estate should be immediately administered to and that the said property may be collected and preserved for those who shall appear to have a legal right under the statute, pray that your Honor will grant letters of administration on said estate to Lemuel L. Wise upon his entering unto bond in such sum as is required by the statute & with such security or securities as shall be approved by your Honor. ??J. A. Foster??, Atty to Pet.
