Duncan James DeVane and William S DeVane were brothers, sons of Stewart DeVane & Eliza Whatley.
Duncan was an attorney and Major in the Confederate Army. Major in Confederate Army, 20th N C Regiment - 33 battles
(p. 566) Company I, the "Sampson Greys"... raised in Sampson County and enlisted at Clinton on June 10, 1861. It was mustered into state service at Fort Johnston, Smithville (Southport), Brunswick County, June 18, 1861, and was assigned to this regiment as Company I. (see p. 512) "Resided in Sampson County where he enlisted at age 25.
Elected 1st Lieutenant to rank from June 10, 1861, and was elected Captain to rank from April 28, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, when he was wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Promoted to Major on May 12, 1864, and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment." (p.512) "Previously served as Captain of this regiment. Promoted to Major on May 12, 1864, and transferred to the Field and Staff. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, May 15, 1864, with a gunshot wound of the left forearm; however, place and date wounded not reported. Returned to duty in May-August, 1864, and was present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, April 9, 1865." (p. 433) According to Frank Lewis, he was with Stewart's Cavalry and participated in 33 battles.
William was a Colonel in Confederate Army, commanding the 61st N C Regiment. Fought in battles of Morris Island SC, Northern VA, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Bentonville. He practiced law in Clinton and later in Wilmington NC with his brother, Major Duncan DeVane and Col. S A Ashe.
James Stuart DeVane was a doctor in the Confederate Army. Co. E, 20th Regiment NC Troops "Born in North Carolina and resided in Duplin County where he was by occupation a physician prior to enlisting in Duplin County at age 25, May 13, 1861. Present or accounted for until appointed Assistant Surgeon on or about June 18, 1861, and transferred. Unit to which transferred not reported." (p. 479). This James was the son of Wm King DeVane and Margaret Ann Fennell.
Wm King DeVane (f/o of James Stuart) and Stewart DeVane (f/o of Duncan James and William S)were brothers, so James Stuart DeVane would have be a cousin to the brothers Duncan James and William S DeVane.
There is also a James S DeVane in my lineage who served in the Confederate Army but I think he was in a Georgia regiment. This James S was the son of Benjamin F DeVane & MAry Jane Rogers. All six of their sons served in the Confederate Army: John Thomas DeVane, Wm H DeVane, Samuel Rowan DeVane, James S DeVane, George J DeVane and Benjamin Franklin DeVane (my gggrandfather).
