DeVane feeling lost in America

I was just feeling kind of frustrated, thought maybe if I shared I'd feel better. I have now been trying to hook myself up with some kind of documentation to where my DeVane line connects for FIVE months now. I'll repeat what I know MAYBE one of the new cousins that weren't on before might know. My fathers name is James DeVane born at an army base in New York in 1937 (siblings Thomas and Shirley), his father was Thomas Emil DeVane (born Emil) in Kissimmee Florida in 1911 died 1944 in WWI (told army was born in 1908 to enter early) supposedly his father signed the okay paper and his name was Thomas Samuel DeVane (at least on army paper - so don't know if the Thomas was added later in life like my grandpa - also don't have the paper, this is what my uncle tells me.) I know Thomas Samuel lived around Plant City, FL also Dade City, FL my uncle said he owned some sort of ice factory. He also used to send oranges to the family when my dad was a kid. Does anybody know where I fit for sure? I don't think I'm ever going to hear from the military! I also can't request his birth certificate unless I have some sort of death certificate - again the military - and I don't know the name of my grandfathers mother. I hope someone can help before I go completely crazy.
