Devaney is derived from the Irish O'Duibeannaig while Devane is derived from O'Dubhain or O'Daimin ("dub" in Irish stands for black and was applied to someone with dark hair or a bad temper). The Devaneys appear to be from the Northwest of Ireland while the Devanes were centered in County Meath. I'm personally researching a definite connection between those who spell the name DeVane (from Thomas and Margaret) and those who spell the name Devane (from Ireland).
