Hi, Richard:

A couple of follow-ups on some angles to think about, specifically about my two favorite angles, Jay Clarence Deuel and Philipsburg.

I came across an old book about Little Nine Partners which has a 19-century map of Pine Plains. There are two "J.Deuels" in the far northwest corner of Pine Plains west of Stissing Mountain, bordering Milan to the west and Columbia County to the north. The book mentions Jonathan Deuel, the great-grandfather of Jay Clarence, and Jay's grandfather Samuel Deuel. Samuel lived in the village of Pine Plains, a couple of miles to the southeast of where Jonathan was (there were actually two Jonathan Deuels in Pine Plains, the book says the other was distantly related).

Anyway, I'm thinking "why does Ephraim go to Philipsburg?" which he does ca1800. One possible answer is that he knows, or is related to, somebody who already lived there. Who could he know in Philipsburg?

There are three Deuels who nobody really knows the ancestry of: Jonathan, Abraham in Rhinebeck who marries Rachel Ham, and the mysterious Hendrick Duel in the 1810 census for Rhinebeck. These three live in Dutchess, but they are kind of separated from most of the Deuels, they live in the north and northwest parts of Dutchess.

One guy in Philipsburg in 1784 is a "Christyaan Hawver." Maybe he's the ancestor of the Mary Hauver who marries John Deuel in Philipsburg, I don't know. The interesting thing is that in the 1770s there is a Christian "Haver" who has several children baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church in Rhinebeck, the same church where Halfmoon Henry was baptized. And this Christian Haver is a sponsor to the baptism of Cornelia Buys (Boyce, Boys, etc.) Cornelia Buys later marries at Nine Partners a nephew of Mary (Wilbore) Deuel, wife of Silas4.

Hermanus Best, the neighbor of Ephraim in Philipsburg, was born in Germantown, Columbia County in 1752. The interesting thing is that Germantown is only ten miles or so from both Rhinebeck and Pine Plains (I think Rhinebeck may have included Red Hook at the time, I know Pine Plains was part of Northeast). Since Ephraim was in Dutchess from 1765-1773, maybe he knew him from there. Hermanus Best was UEL in the 2nd New York during the Revolution, I don't see any evidence that Ephraim was, but there is some inference at least that he was in the Green Mountain Boys, who were more hostile to New Yorkers than the British, and technically Ephraim would have been in the independent nation of Vermont until 1793. By the way, Ethan Allen died after a late-night carousing with his former comrades at South Hero in 1795, maybe Ephraim was present.

Back to the map of Pine Plains, there are a number of Ham families in the immediate vicinity of Jonathan Deuel, maybe they went to church in Rhinebeck, I don't know if there was a Dutch Reformed church in Pine Plains at the time. The earliest settlers of Pine Plains were Palatinate, the Yankees took the good farmland in Washington and Dover and the Germans were left to deal with the limestone outcroppings in Pine Plains, I guess.

Two other neighbors of Jonathan Deuel on the old map of Pine Plains are "B.Wilbur" and "D.Gifford." So now I had to figure out who they were in another episode of "this little piggy went to Dutchess." One is very likely my third cousin five times removed Daniel6(Joshua5, Sarah4, Jeremiah3, Robert2, William1) Gifford. He married a daughter of Ezek Wilbur, brother of Silas4 Deuel's wife Mary (two of Mary's siblings married Giffords from Little Compton) and is recorded as being buried in Pine Plains.

The Wilbur I'm less sure about, but both are nephews of Mary Deuel, Benjamin5(Robert4) Wilbur or Benjamin5(Esek4) Wilbur. The fathers of both went to Dutchess, by the way you can see photos of the house built by Samuel2 Wilbore (grandfather of Mary) in 1690 on the website of the Little Compton Historical Society, which is headquartered in that house. Robert4 Wilbore's wife was Freelove4(Benjamin3, Jonathan2, William1) Davol, I hope Freelove didn't have any brothers who went to Dutchess too because that will give me an entirely different line to think about.
