Hi, Richard: In Howard C. Hosmer's "Monroe County: 1821-1971" it states that in 1876 "Governor Samuel Tilden named John W. Deuel and George W. Sill judges in the new Rochester municipal or city court." I haven't found a John W. Deuel who would be the right age to fit. Given that he was in Monroe County, maybe there is some connection with Harry Porter Deuel. In the same year, of course, Tilden lost the disputed presidential election to Rutherford ("Rutherfraud" in the eyes of disappointed Democrats) B. Hayes. In a prior message I mistakenly referred to the Republican reformers in the Blaine/Conkling 1880 confrontation as mugwumps, when in fact that term wasn't used until 1884. In 1880, the GOP reformers were called "half breeds." My sincere apologies to any half breeds who were offended by calling them mugwumps. The only suitable candidate I could come up with for the wife of Halfmoon Henry is Hannah6 (David5-4, John3-2, Richard1) Bidwell (1785-1854). The Bidwells were a common family in CT but rare in NY. John2 Bidwell was a founder of Hartford in 1635 with the Rev. Thomas Hooker group, an achievement we still commemorate in Hartford every October with the "Hooker Day" parade. This Hannah was born in Stillwater, had a cousin who married a John Devol in Saratoga, and had an uncle who went from Saratoga to Quebec shortly before the War of 1812. Word is that Santa Claus has a book on Canadian resources and methods with my name on it. Whether I get the book or the anthracite I deserve is still an open question, but at the last minute I'm putting in some uncharacteristic good behavior in an effort to improve my chances.
