Hello Rick, The Jacob Deuel you mention here IS NOT the Jacob Smith Deuel who had the county in southeastern South Dakota named for him. Jacob Smith Deuel9, son of Abner8, son of Jonathan7 was born in NY in 1830, probably in Dutchess. Jacob Smith Deuel seemed to fit one of our family traditions, that my grandfather had an uncle (could also make the assumption it was a great uncle) who had a county out west named for him. Not only is this true of Jacob, but he also had a brother named Henry!! The only problem with this Henry H. Deuel is that he was born in 1831 and died in 1881. On one of our research road trips, we found this Henry's grave at the Friend's Ground in Stanfordville, New York. Jacob Smith Deuel's cousin Abner Hoag Deuel married a Canadian woman. Their son Charles was born in Canada. Many of Jacob's cousins ended up in Hartland, Niagara County, New York, which is near Canada. We never fully discounted this line for some sort of connection. All of this information was obtained from Descendants of Richard Devol. Jacob Smith Deuel is at the bottom of page 5 and Henry H. on page 6. Here is the URL for this site: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/d/e/u/Patrick-D-Deuel/ODT6-0005.html Will write more soon, Richard
