Crests, swords and family info generally
Hi, have just come to this forum for the first time to find my eldest brother (and the Deuchar expert) and my nephew David and niece Anna got here before me.I hardly dare say anything but....
We are direct descendants from Alexander and David Deuchar of Edinburgh.Alexander, seal engraver and Lyon Herald at the Courth of the Lord Lyon of Scotland and a freemason, gained most fame/notoriety for refounding the Knights Templar in Scotland, but set up a body that allowed entry to non-freemasons.Bonny Prince Charlie had been the previous top-dog-but-one, but interestingly the Deuchar family of the time was described as Jacobite until just before Culloden when they switched allegiance to the House of Hanover. How wise, but how unromantic!!David Deuchar, his brother, an officer in the Royal Regiment of Foot (Royal Scots) assisted with the move by taking a cross from a Portugese Templar Church whilst he was serving in the Peninsular War and donating it!And of course there is then David Deuchar (1743-1808) who was also a seal engraver and goldsmith, and the famous artist who is said to have taught Sir Henry Raeburn to paint.
As for the sword, I have only ever heard of one sword and that is in the Glamis Folk Museum, with a curse on it that it should never be taken out of Scotland. It is a very big sword, and was traditionally believed to have been used at the Battle of Harlaw, by a Deuchar with six fingures on his hands. When killed in battle, they could only return the sword to his wife by cutting off his hand as well! What nice people....
