I have a little information about Mr. Detlefsen. He worked as a matte painting artist in Hollywood from sometime in the 1920's to the 1950's. A matte painting artist worked within the "trick photography" department of a movie studio studio painting highly realistic paintings that were combined with real locations and sets to provide wider or more spectacular views. Some of his most notable work was the RKO logo featuring the radio tower on top of the earth emitting stylized radio waves, and some beautiful shots in the 1939 "Adventures of Robin Hood". There is a photograph of Mr. Detlefsen at work on the RKO logo in the 1980 book "David O'Selznick's Hollywood" by Ronald Haver. One of Mr. Detlefsen's hobbies was model railroading. There is an article in the December 1962 Model Railroader magazine on Mr. Detlefsen's home layout, complete with stunning painted backgrounds and highly detailed structures. There are two of his railroad themed paintings available as prints at www.tracksideprints.com.
