Dear Zoe Deterding-Barker,

My grandmother, Margarethe Deterding, was born in Hanover in 1858. She immigrated to San Francisco, California in 1885 with her brother and two sisters. Their father, Heinrich Gustav Ernst Dedtering, was a musician in the Royal Hanovarian Army until its disolution in 1866. The family over several generations lived in a number of towns south of Hanover, such as Hildesheim, Borsum, Einbeck and Stuttheim. Sadly, the church records in Stuttheim (a village near Einbeck) go only back to 1789. My earlier tracable ancestor was Caspar Deterding, who fought in the Napoleonic Wars, born in 1772 in Stuttheim. Our family believes that we go back to a Deterding family originally in Stadhagen. When Sir Henri Deterding visited San Francisco some time in the 1920's, my great-aunt Marie Dederding Wolff visited him at the St. Francis Hotel and during their discussions seemingly decided that there was some sort of remote family tie. I have no way of knowing if this is true. I see that Henri was born in Holland, but presumably of a German family. The name Heinrich (Henri) was born by most males in our family, normally as the first of three given names. Should it interest you, I have a rather full family tree starting with Caspar, born 1772. Incidently, I am a retired American diplomat living in Portugal for many years. I visit London on an almost monthly basis.

Best wishes,

Robert F. Illing
