It is amazing to me the controversy you mention over whether or not the name is German or French. My father always told people it was a german name, but it appears very French. I was told that the name originated in Alsace-Lorraine, a region that was frequently changing hands between the French and the Germans, thus the confusion over the origin. At one time, German was spoken by the family, perhaps Pennsylvania Deutsch.
