according to the legend in our family which goes from father to son, the Dessaur family started off as a French Huguenot (Protestant) family.
When the Huguenots were forced to become either Catholic or leave the country, this family chose the second option.
They left France, went to Germany to the town of Dessau in the East.
There one of the men married a Jewish woman, had some kids and died.
The woman brought the kids up as Jews, as according to Jewish law, children from a Jewish mother are Jews.
At some point one or more members of the family took off for Holland. Coming from Dessau, they were known as the Dessauers, this changed later into Dessaur.
I traced the family back to 1762, already in Holland.
There were two branches, one in The Hague and one in Amsterdam, and for some unknown reason there was a feud between them.
I met a fellow from The Hague who wanted to know if we were related,
He did not know anything about his family, but to my amazement cited the story of the Huguenots and their flee to Germany, so I was aable to say to him: we are somehow in the far distance related.i believe Gillian's forefathers were from the The Hague branch, as no name I know was mentioned.
I hope you can relay this story to her, she'll be happy to received.
