Joseph Benjamin DesRoches was born March 21, 1872 in P.E.I. He married Elizabeth Collins (born Sept. 29, 1872 in P.E.I.) Abt. 1894 in P.E.I. Joseph went by the name "Ben". Their children were: Margaret (b. Abt. 1895), Alice (b. March 14, 1896), Daveda (b. Feb. 17, 1900), Edith (b. Abt. 1901), Arthur (b. 1902), Peter, Joseph, Thomas, Everett, Edna, Rita. At the time of the 1901 census, Ben and Elizabeth were living in Lot 18, Hamilton, P.E.I. From Hamilton the family moved to Margate, P.E.I. and then to Long River, P.E.I.
