I have been doing genealogy research for 15 years and only been online for the last year and a half. It is neccessary to go visit the courthouse in the area where your ancestors lived and look up birth, marriage and death records. Most courthouses let you look for free and you can take a notebook and pencil and copy the necessary info, also obituaries are very helpful. So once you have dates you can go to the library and read old microfilmed newspapers. These records are vital...if you are not able to go there in person, I have found many nice people who are willing to do it for next to nothing. Good Luck!
