Diane-- Hello. Cathy Bradley introduced us to each other at the Dallas quilt show a couple of years ago. You were there to see "Annie's Quilt." I am thrilled to find you working on the DeSpain family!!
I descend from Margaret (Lewis) Daugherty DeSpain's sister Matilda (Lewis) Mason, who was also in Hopkins Co., TX by 1850.
Margaret Lewis married Walter Daugherty in Madison Co., AL on 19 Jan 1829. That is the same county where her sister Matilda Lewis married William Mason (my ancestors). She later married John DeSpain in Hopkins Co., TX, he must have been a widower at that time since there are elder children in the family. I can't sort out which of those children were Daughertys and which were DeSpains.
I just saw a post that James N. DeSpain, a son of John was born in Hardin Co., Tn on 8 Jan 1847/48. That fits with some of the information I have. I have William Masonon a list of insolvencies in Hardin Co., TN in 1845/6 (when he removed from Hardin Co., TN to Hopkins Co., TX). "John D. Spain" is on an insolvencies list in Hardin Co., TN within a year or two of William Mason. I've always thought that he would be the same John D. Spain as the John DeSpain in Hopkins Co., TX.
John Lewis and wife Susan Daniels are supposedly the parents of our Margaret and Matilda. I only have a secondary list from an online site, which is not much proof, but a start. John Lewis supposedly died in Hardin Co., TN c. 1848, but I have not been able to find primary documentation to support that. John Lewis and family lived in KY--Pulaski Co., KY and probably Knox Co., KY. Then they must have moved roughly to the Madison Co., AL area, where many of his children married (in Madison and surrounding counties). I'm starting to find references to some of his children in McNairy Co., TN...where the DeSpains may have been. Willaim Mason and family went from AL to Hardin Co., TN before coming to TX. Matilda's brother Wiley Lewis came to TX by way of Crittenden Co., AR. Another brother-in-law, Milton Wardlow who married Jane Lewis came to TX from AL by way of MS, probably Carroll Co., MS. Yet another sister, Rebecca Lewis, who married Aaron Rice, lived in Bowie Co., TX.
I am trying to track all of the supposed children of John Lewis and put them together as a family. So far, I've discovered that several siblings were in Hopkins Co., TX, living near each other briefly. Then they fan out into Hunt Co. My Masons left Hopkins Co. for Cass and Marion counties.
The hard proof that links all of these together as the children of John Lewis still eludes me.
Anyway, since the Lewis siblings were using the buddy system, I'm very intersted in the DeSpains!
