Just curious, how did you trace back to Hernando? (My best friend received his PhD in Spanish at Chapel Hill, (UNC). He created a 13th century dictionary for his doctoral thesis.
My father, William Patrick DeSoto, a vetern of WWII, Korea-8240th Partisans/WolfPack One, Laos White Star-early 60's, and Vietnam. In 1954 he joined Special Forces; 77th, 7th, 5th, and 10th SFG's, and MACVSOG. We were re-united 3 yrs ago after a 28 yr seperation. He sent me a lot of military documentation and family genealogy.
He was born in Key West as was my grandmother Rosa (Herrera) DeSoto. His father, William Manuel DeSoto was born in the Canary Islands. His grandfather was from Galasia, Spain who married Adela Garcia, born in the Canary Islands and whose family owned a candy factory in Spain and sugar plantation in Cuba. I have a 1887 of her in Havana. His maternal grandfather, Gonzale Herrera was in Spain. He was a commercial fisherman and salvage diver in Key West where he died in 1927. He was married to Vicenta Rica Herrera who was from the Sebona or Sebone Indian Tribe, (South American?). I was born in Augsburg, Germany. Mom's side of the family is from Germany/Silesa/Prussia. I'm just begining to creat a formal genealogy for the family and would like to search records; Miami, Key West, Cuba, Canary Islands and Spain and my mother's European lineage as well. Any Spainish pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, Andy DeSoto
