I am looking for the parents of Julia Maude Desmond and a marriage date and place. Her granddaughter provided the maiden name. Her birth date is ambiguous. Her obituary and the 1901 census of Canada agree that the day was 23 August. The 1901 census explicitly gives the year as 1876. From her age of 34 on the 1910 US census, we calculate a birth year of 1875. In 1920 she was 43, for a birth year of 1876. In 1930 she was 52, for a birth year of 1877. And her obituary said she was 61 years old and born in 1878. Her obituary and one census put her birth place as Boston. The other US censuses just say Massachusetts. She married John DeWitt Snodgrass (1875-1907) of LaGrande, OR, some time before they were counted in the 1901 census of Canada in Yale/Cariboo, BC, without children. She is listed as Julia Snodgrass. John was spending at least part of his time in BC starting about 1897 with his father's business interests, and continued to listed in directories through 1901. The family store was listed as late as 1910. John died in BC on 12 Feb 1907. For the 1910 US census Julia Snodgrass and a son, John Francis Snodgrass, were in LaGrande, OR. She was a widowed nurse, born in Massachusetts. Her parents were born in Ireland and Massachusetts. In 1918 Julia married David Hodge in Bend, OR. He died in 1919. For the 1920 census she, listed as Maude Hodge, and son John were still in Bend. She was born in Massachusetts, her father was born in Scotland and spoke Irish; her mother was born in Ireland and spoke Irish. On the other hand, her son's mother was born in Scotland and spoke English, so there is clearly some confusion here. Some time between 1923 and 1930 she married George O'Neil, and appears in the 1930 census as Julia M. O'Neil in Bend. She was born in Massachusetts, her father in Irish Free State, and her mother in Massachusetts. Her son John, married and divorced since 1920, is living with them. She died 20 Mar 1940 in Bend and is buried in Pilot Butte Cemetery there, listed as Julia Maude O'Neil. So, I'm looking for connections between a Massachusetts family with a Julia Maude Desmond born in the late 1870's who relocated to either Oregon or British Columbia before 1900. One other slight possibility would be Cincinnati as an intermediate stop. John's father, William Jessup Snodgrass (1843-1909), was from that area, and John's sister Viola (1877-1881), though born in Oregon, is buried in the family plot in Cincinnati.
