Philip:

NOt sure if this might help, but...

Ménard Family Members Group - http://www.egroups.com/list/menard-family-members/ - set up like GENFORUM with postings (# 281 as of Dec 15, 1999) with Q’s and A’s.

“DesLauriers”, a French name meaning “near the laurels” has three main branches. Some kept the Deslauriers name, but others are known as Cordeau, Legault or Ménard. These families all came to Quebec in the 1600s. It was common for them to drift down through the States. The American-French Genealogy Society in Woonsocket, RI has info on lots of them.

The American-French Genealogy Society in Woonsocket, RI is a very good society which focuses on the people of S-E MA and RI. Go to - http://www.mtn.org/mgs/branches/nw.html - with LINKS to:

Manchester, NH has the American-Canadian Genealogical Society that focuses on French-Canadians of that area. Go to URL - http://www.acgs.org - Donald Chaput, queries editor for “the American-Canadian Genealogist”, journal of the American-Canadian Genealogical Society receives e-mail at - 102475.2260@compuserve - The Society website is - http://www.acgs.org - Look at their Research Services. They charge modest fees for research. Fees are halved if you join the society which is also modestly priced. If you live in New England, visit them because they are the best library for French-Canadian genealogy research.

The first Legault to come to Canada was named Rock Legault dit Deslaurier in about 1630. He m. c1632 a Marie Hard. She had been kidnapped by the Hurons or Algonquin in the British Colonies and sold to the French in Montréal. She was adopted and baptised Catholic. In the records she is sometimes recorded with two names.
