Robin,
It's interesting to me that you mention Beaulieus of the Chippewa tribe. My great-great-grandfather Joseph DESJARDINS was married to Pauline BEAULIEU (my gg-gmo., of course).Pauline was a descendant of Antoine ROY dit DESJARDINS through her mother's line.
I have come to believe from family tradition and from some study of history that they were both Metis, but have been unable to document this, because most of the records that I've studied have been records of the Catholic Church.Through these records and some censuses, I have discovered that my gg-gmo. Pauline BEAULIEU's family did not come from the U.S. midwest, though, but from Quebec, then into Maine in the 1850's.
The weird thing about my gg-gparents is that they married in Maine in 1857, supposedly both having been born in Quebec in the 1830's.But my gg-gmo. went directly from Quebec to Maine (and this I have documented), while my gg-gfa. supposedly went from Quebec to tribal land in Michigan, then to Maine probably in the 1850's when the tribe was broken up by the government. Unfortunately my family's tradition does not give me any tribal names, except possibly MiqMak or Cree, and those were associated with other lines of my family, not these two.
Would this kind of scenario as I've described about my gg-gfa. make any sense to you or your father?I'd appreciate any further help you might be able to give. And feel free to e-mail me, if you like.
Thanks, Anne
