Since John hasn't posted a response, I will jump in. His father has published a book on the Derrick family in South Carolina. He has traced the family back to a widow Derrick who arrived on a transport to Georgia in 1738 to help settle Fort Frederica, St. Simons Island,GA. Her children turn up later in an area called "Dutch Fork" near Columbia, S.C.All of the Derricks in S.C. are pretty much descended from this family. His book is now in it's second printing(c.1991). Since my family line is in there twice [guess this makes me a double Derrick :-) ], I bought several copies to give to my family members for Christmas.
