Actually I am reading Johnny Depp: A Kind of Illusion (it is available US now) and pg. 21 lists Johnny's grandparents as Walter and Bessie Wells on his mother's side--hard working tobacco farmers who lived near Frankfort. On his dad's side are Oren and Violet (Maddie) Depp--middle-class couple who lived in a wealthier neighborhood on the other side of Frederica St.--across from them were his Aunt Sheila and Uncle Bobby. The book goes on to describe the Depp family origins from Pierre Deppe--son of Frengh Huguenots who settled in VA. Johnny's dad, John Depp Snr was the 9th generation of naturallized Depps.
As a point of clarification this book, and the other biographies I have read (as well as TV shows and fan-sites) all say Johnny's name is John Christopher Depp II (not III).
