The 1840 GA census for Baldwin Co with three females in the household plus Mary Ann may have been the females listed in her will. Mary Ann`s husband was much older than her and I believe he had died in Jasper Co GA. This fellow is James DENTON and it is possible he was from NC or SC with his line from VA. James W. that enlisted from Baldwin Co GA on 14 May 1861 in the 4th GA Infantry Regiment. He was a POW 03 July 1863 to 16 June 1865 and was in miserable shape upon his release. We understand that not too many soldiers were able to walk out of Fort Delaware DE without help. James W. of Baldwin Co GA is not found in 1870 nor 1880. If he managed not to perish from his wounds and malnutrition he does not show up so far. We do know of a Mary DENTON (widow) listed in Jasper Co GA for the 1832 Gold Lottery from 373rd GMD. She is not listed in Jasper Co in 1840. James McCord and James Monroe DENTON are not part of your line as far as I can determine. I hope this has not muddied the water too much. When you have folks constantly moving and the county lines keep moving it does get maddening trying to stay on the trail. Jasper Co was carved from Baldwin in 1807 and orighinally called Randolph Co until 1812. James DENTON was in Oglethorpe Co GA earlier and this county was carved from Wilkes Co in 1793. And there is a James DENTON in Elbert Co GA Tax Digests in 1814 and this county also carved from Wilkes Co in in 1790. If I do see something in regard to your James W. we will post you here. Good luck on your research. Notify Administrator about this message?
