I've been wanting to sort out my mother's ancestral roots in Queens Co., but didn't know where to start with the Dentons, then I saw this:

The” Colwell” was an immediate flag, but only because of the Maquapit Lake location. The Colwells in Queens Co. come in 2 very different colors! The Loyalist Colwells from NY settled originally in the Jemseg area, I believe John Colwell buried in Slipp cemetery.; and the Irish Caldwell/Colwells descended from a Robert Caldwell from Ireland ca. 1791.

“My” Colwells, also Irish, descend from a pair of brothers , one of whom settled in the Scotchtown area on Maquapit Lake in Canning Parish, the only Colwell family to do so. His name was Samuel Colwell, he married locally, and his wife may have been named Susan (Susannah?)see 1861 Census; they had 2 sons, Samuel(d.May5,1890 age 69 PANB Cemetery records) and Robert, and 2 daughters, Atheline(Athelina) who never married and Betsy (Elizabeth) who married James Olmstead....their daughter Julia Ann later married Joseph Denton.
{Robert married Eliza Fraser, reportedly settled in Cumberland Bay area, but no trace of them has been found, nor is there any information about the brother of Samuel 1.}

The son Samuel 2 married, according to family history, Margaret Denton, d/o ??? ?? The 1861 Census Canning/Cambridge shows Susan, Mother, age 72 and a sister, Athelina,37, living with them. Census, Canning 1861, 1871, 1891 shows this family living among several Denton and Olmstead families.
The Will of Samuel Denton UEL states Waterborough, his son and daughter, Samuel Denton(Hannah Thorne) and Sarah Thorne( Stephen), were married there, but they were both living in 1871 in Canning (Census) next -door to the Colwells and are all buried with their pre-deceased spouses(including UEL wife Elizabeth) in Scotchtown Cemetery near Douglas Harbour on Maquapit Lake…along with “my” Colwells…neighbors in death as well as life. (PANB Cemetery records)

My question… and I may be grasping at straws, here… could the Susan age 72 in 1861, mother of Samuel 2 , possibly be the “daughter Susannah Colwell” mentioned in Samuel the Loyalists will?

Who were the parents of Samuel the Loyalist Denton? and wife Elizabeth?

And, who was Margaret Denton, w/o Samuel Colwell?
Thanks for posting this info, it's been a big help in one of my great challenges!
