Let me break down your questions and take the easy ones first: Mary Shercliffe was possibly, but not probably, the wife of John Dent before Mary Hatch; it is more likely that she was married to someone named Dant.
About John Dent and Thomas Dent: even "Charles County Gentry" by Harry Wright Newman doesn't clear up this relationship; in fact, he doesn't even try hard. Nor do any other books or CD's I have read. But doing a little detective work through multiple sources, I think it very likely that The Thomas Dent to whom we refer was the UNCLE of John Dent who married Mary Hatch. Which gets me to your question about documentation.
There are so many sources of genealogical information nowadays that I just devour as much as possible (used over 5,000 sheets of computer printing paper last year); I buy Family Tree Maker CD's, I buy books, I go to libraries and copy pages and take notes, I copy other family data from the Internet, I read and correspond with other Genforum readers, and, from all of this, I use my best judgment in putting it all together into the most logical, coherent line of descent - in this case - that I can. It's all documented (in those thousands of sheets, by family surname) and from reasonable sources (for the most part; I pit one source against the other when they differ, as they often do, and then make my own judgment). And as new and convincing data is unearthed, I accept change; sometimes grudgingly, I admit.
You should add your five generations with a clear conscience.

David
