With regard to your John Dent, I have found the following through the genealogy library service of Genealogy.com in the book entitled "Colonial Families of the United States," Vol. III, Dent Family, p. 153:
Walter Dent, b. circa 1725; d. circa 1760; m. (wife's name unknown). His widow m. ________ Hampton.

John Dent, b. May 1755, d 20th Sept. 1840; Lieutenant in the Ninth Virginia Regiment in the War of the Revolution; was first Sheriff of Monongalia Co.; member of the Virginia Assembly, and Justice of the Peace; m. Margaret Evans, b. 1763, d. 23d Nov. 1851, dau. of Col. John Evans, First County Clerk of Monongalia Co.

It appears that, at least according to this source, your John is the son of Walter Dent, not George. Hope this helps.
