Richard:
Garrett was an investor from the Albany NY area (likely now Warren CO NY). The name Garret V Denniston appears several times in Warren CO court records. Likely this is the same man.

I am not sure he even came out to Cassville. He was more then likely involved in hireing bricklayers and masons from Upstate NY to build the new state captial at Cassville. The production of bricks was a mainstay in Upstate NY. Most of the bricks in NYC came from there. Garrett's grandfather was Hugh Denniston that owned a tavern in Albany during the Revolution. I have more on his family but will have to go back and look for it.

Our main research has been regarding William Winney that came from Cherry Valley NY through White Pigeon, Michigan and settled in Glen Haven Grant County WI. William Winney and his brother-in-law Luther Basford were also involved in building the Denniston House. William held several offices in Grant County and died there in 1881.
I note you were looking for a Dr Newhall that lived in Casville in 1827. William's sister Maria Cornelia Winney
married Richard S. Newhall; 1837 in White Pigeon, St Joseph County, MI. Richard Newhall reportedley was born about 1814 in MA. They lived in Sheboygan in 1850. I wonder if these two Newhalls might have been brothers?
Hope this helps and please feel free to contact me directly.
