Denny DNA Surname Project
There is now a formal website which will allow you to participate in Y-DNA testing (you must be a male Denney/Denny or have a volunteer) to further your genealogical paper trails.Just go to the website http://home.comcast.net/~denneydnahttp://home.comcast.net/~denneydna and click on the STEPS TO JOIN button; then follow the instructions.
If you are truly interested in having an accurate Denny family history, you should always attempt to prove it with DNA testing. Here are just some of the reasons to use DNA testing:
1. As we go further back in time, our paper trail (written records) gets fainter and fainter--DNA does not.
2. Much of the documentary evidence that is being posted online is full of inaccuracies, many of the traditionally relied upon “old genealogies” that were written decades ago are full of holes, especially when you get further back in time, and we have made to make assumptions about some older Denny lines, based on what little paper evidence we have--DNA testing should be able to prove or disprove these lines.
3. As more documentary evidence becomes available online, you can use DNA testing to “focus” your efforts on specific DNA-proven lines (in other words, you are not wasting your time on a Denny/Denney line that is not even your own).
4. DNA testing can steer you in directions you probably would not have thought of researching, when using conventional paper trails.
5. By joining the Denny DNA Surname project, you can also find out how closely you are related to other test participants in the Denny surname group.
6. If you have some Denny lines that are questionable, DNA testing can also help to prove or refute the assumptions you have made for those lines.
7. In some cases, if you have gaps in your paper record, DNA testing may also allow you to push back in time beyond these gaps.
Some experts now believe that the impact of DNA testing on genealogy will be as great (or more so) than the Internet. They see a quantum shift coming in genealogy where (when we have the major Denny lines DNA tested and proven) someone who is just beginning their genealogical quest may (as in the past) collect what they know about their family. But then, the next logical next step for them will be to take a DNA test, to see which Denny line they descend from.Their efforts could then be concentrated on that line and they could search the databases specifically for that line.
If you have any questions, you may email me directly at [email protected], Denny, or variant family surnames from all over the world are welcome to participate.
