While I am sure there is an element of truth in the Romany theory, I would still like to see some concrete evidence for my particular ancestors before I can fully accept it.
Some other info to throw into the discussion:- The area around East Kent provided a very harsh existence for the average farm worker. My interest in the Aldington Gang (of which Thomas Dennard(b.1803)was a member)has shown examples of farm workers destroying farm machinery to protect their livlihoods - 1 even murdered the farmer's son who discovered the worker in the act, wholesale village smuggling (The gang could muster as many as 200 locals when a cargo was being landed) and in Bilsington itself (a village today of some 200 persons) a monument from a benefactor gentleman so concerned with the plight of the 'peasants' that he paid for some to emmigrate & make a fresh start. Perhaps a life on the road was preferable to abject poverty & starvation stuck on a farm? who knows.
Refering to Thomas Price Dennard:His marriage certificate clearly states Grenadier Guard when he married Harriet Wayman 21.6.1882 in St.James Westminster. He died a college servant in Cambridge 5.3.1906. Son Percy was a Raiway Porter marrying Margaret Coates17.10.1910 in Wales.Harriet died with her son on 1.9.1922.The military careers of TPD and his brother (my 2xGt Grandfather) William James Dennard are currently under investigation.
