Danish emigration process to USA

For years I knew my grandfather came to Ellis Island in 1903 on the Oceanic II which left Liverpool, England. Until recently, I had no idea where he came from in Denmark. I searched many emigration records with no success. I finally found his family through the Danish census records. But I am curious about the emigration steps around 1903. What steps would be taken, and where would records be kept in Denmark? If he took a ship to England to get on the ship to USA, what steps and records would be kept in England. Would he be shown in any immigration records, and then shown as emigrating? I am missing the links from home to his boarding the ship in Liverpool, where he is on the passenger list. I am curious if any other family members went with him. He was only 14, and going to live in USA with a brother, 20 years older whom he had never met. Who else left, why did they leave when they did?

I am not asking for any research work to be done, I will do that, but just want to understand that missing trail of travel.

Thanks for listening.
