Name gets misspelt a lot: in 1880 it's Ferguson:

        Household:

Name        Relation        Marital Status        Gender        Race        Age        Birthplace        Occupation        Father's Birthplace       Mother's Birthplace
Peter FERGUSON         Self         M         Male         W         46         DEN         Carpenter         DEN         DEN
Anna M. FERGUSON         Wife         M         Female         W         45         ENG         Keeps House         ENG         ENG
Mariane FERGUSON         Dau         S         Female         W         9         WI                 DEN         ENG

Source Information:
       Census Place        Hartland, Waukesha, Wisconsin
       Family History Library Film        1255451
       NA Film Number        T9-1451
       Page Number        24D

In 1900 I believe they are in Brown, SD. listed as 'Forguson'. You could ask for the full info at recordlooups - this should give you info on emigration/naturalization. IGI shows him as d. 1903 also in South Dakota - either his obituary from SD or town history books for either Wisconsin or South Dakota might show up some info about him.
