My Denley connections are earlier than yours - and female, so the name changed during the 19th century.

My information about Denleys comes from John Denley Barnes, who will be well known to readers of this forum. He tells me that there were 3 groups of Denleys living in Plymouth in the late 19th century. I think your John Denley may be from the family of John Vincent Denley born circa 1841, died 1897, who joined the Royal Marines and was stationed in Devonport. He became the licensee of the Bulls Head, Queen Street, Devonport and was married to Mary Jane Ellis. If this seems likely, contact me and I'll give you the details I have about John Vincent's antecedents.
