Originally, I was told my Dempsey family was from Sligo, however, I now find out that they originated in Galway.
This is what I have so far:
Andrew Dempsy (Dempsey) born 1821 in Springhead Providence, Yorkshire ENGLAND (go figure!) met and married a Catherine Fenaghty (Finerty) in 1864; Ballymacward, Galway, Ireland.
Their Children:
Martin b. 1864 d. 1920
Mary b. 1866
and we think: Andrew, Michael, and Patrick, born 1885, 1877, and 1872 respectively, all in Ireland but don't know where.
Martin married a Margaret (called Delia) McDermitt (McDermott) in 1890, either in Ireland or in Philadelphia. They both immigrated in or around 1890.
Margaret/Delia's mother's name was Catharine.
father's name was Michael.
Martin and Delia's children were:
James b. 1891
Catherine b. 1893
John b. 1896
Margaret b. 1897
Mary b. 1899
Michael b. 1903
Agnes b. 1907.
we think there was an Andrew, too, but died as an infant.?date
All children were born in Philadelphia.
Michael, my grandfather, married Catherine Green in Philadelphia.
In doing my research, i have found out that alot of this family information that was given to me in the past was in error, as the census information and writings/spellings were fairly subjective, and ages, etc. were also guessed and often lied about...
What i have is fairly accurate, according to some older family individuals.
If there is anyone out there who has a connection to these elusive Galway Dempseys, please contact me. Any information would be appreciated, as well as reciprocated.
