If you are talking about Jack Dempsey, the boxer, he was my grandfather's 2nd cousin, once removed, and my father's 3rd cousin. In Jack's autobiography, "By the Man Himself", 1960, he states: I was born June 24, 1895, in Manassa, Colorado, the ninth child and fifth son of Hyrum and Cecilia Smoot Dempsey. I am basically Irish, with Cherokee blood from both parents, plus a Jewish strain from my father's great-grandmother, Rachel Solomon.

The family originally came from the Logan County WV area, where they came to in 1799 from Botetourt County VA. Hyrum's father was a "big landowner and a major politician in Logan County, West Virginia. He was sheriff and county surveyor of Logan for years." Jack is a descendant of William Dempsey, an Irish immigrant, from Botetourt County VA.
