Dick I just returned from Co.Offaly area and I have a g-grandfather, John Dempsey b.1847 who listed home address as Clonbullogue when he joined the Dublin Metropolitan Police in 1867. His father, I believe, was Patrick Dempsey from that area, mother possibly Sarah or Sally. could use help with this! A William J. Dempsey still resides in Clonbullogue as I understand from him there are several Dempseys still in the area. A James in Brackna or Bracknagh and perhaps Dempseys in Rathgar as well. I didn't have time to research further into it at this time, perhaps you will find info.here. John Dempsey, the policeman, married in Donnybrook to Ellen O'Callaghan , of Killaloe, Co.Clare,in 1877 and all of their children,I believe, were born in the Dublin area, birth years range from 1878 to 1896 of which John, my grandfather, being born in 1883 in Dublin somewhere. This John emigrated to Port of New York in 1906 from Cobh and resided in Ohio and Pennsylvania area til his death in Akron,Ohio 3 March 1919. He had married Harriet Heilman b.17 Jul 1910,Pittsburgh,PA. My father,Kevin James Dempsey,was the younger of 2 boys, b.24 Jun 1912 d.22 Mar 1970, older brother John Aloysius b.1911 d.1993. There are 2 of my 2nd cousins in Dublin area I did contact. I have someone looking further into the Dempseys in Co.Offaly. I shall wait to hear and if I can be of help I shall pass info. on to you.
