Dempsey, founder of the line, was an O'Connor-Faly. His son was Mc Dempsey. Mc or Mac means "son of" . The children of Mc D were O'Dempseys. I've found about 20 different spellings of Dempsey. About the strangest was for a French branch of the family. Would you believe Houden??
By law for centuries it was against the law for an Irish catholic to get an education. This changed in 1826. Spellings were determined by local priests who at best were semi-educated. About 1850 spellings of Irish names standardized. At the present non-standard spellings usually denote a protestant or early immigrant branch. A Lord Walter Fitzgerald wrote a wonderful history of the family in 1905. I quoted him.
Glad to hear from another Dempsey researcher.
rdempsey1@home.com is an excellent way to reach me. Are you from a very early family branch or a more recent line?
